COMM 102C is one of those classes that’s hard to sum up in a sentence or two. Multi-disciplinary in nature and drawing from a variety of theoretical backgrounds, the class feeds off of the skills, interests and knowledge of its students — YOU! — to make it a unique and highly relevant and engaging experience for everyone involved. What happens at the practicum site? Lots of stuff! On a given day, you could be hanging out with kids or adults doing yoga, gardening, cooking, playing video games, making movies, or countless other activities. This course provides an opportunity to let your creative side shine through while simultaneously offering an in-depth look into how various aspects of communication — particularly storytelling — mediate the human experience by forming, shaping and deconstructing dominant narratives and discourses. |
For Human Development & Psychology Students
COMM 102C provides an enriching opportunity for students to explore how individuals and their surrounding communities change and develop along a variety of dimensions, such as identity formation, informal learning and community well-being. In this course, you will be working closely with youth and adults to create jointly-produced media projects that encourage a deeper understanding of how storytelling practices be used to explore community life and social justice as modes of human development. |
For Ethnic Studies Students
COMM 102C allows you to engage with methods that examine how individuals relate to critical knowledge of systems of power and equality. Jointly-produced digital media projects serve as a lens for gaining a deeper understanding of how these systems of knowledge have emerged throughout racialized communities in addition to how, through continued inquiry and analysis, they can be re-examined. |
For Visual Arts Students
Want to gain valuable, real world experience in digital media & design-based work that can be used to build your resume? This course situates art and design as a medium to explore new frameworks for collaboration and communication in the spaces, networks and media channels through which people construct personal and group narratives that produce systems of knowledge and define communities. |
For Public Health Students
With a longstanding tradition of public health initiatives and advocacy, COMM 102C's community practicum site which features a community garden, healthy snack program, weekly farmer's market, yoga and other health-based efforts provides a rich and immersive opportunity to develop and apply culturally sensitive knowledge in public health. Methods of media production and dissemination allow students to investigate how existing cultural narratives shape local knowledge, including choices relating to health and wellness. |
